What is Psychology?

January 22nd, 2011

Those who are drawn to understanding the whys and hows of the human mind would do well to study psychology. As opposed to neurobiology which studies the brain, psychology studies the mind, which is human behavior, emotions, perception, motivation, and things like cognition and attention. Human personality, interpersonal relationships and brain functioning are also studied in formal psychology programs.

As with any field, specialization is rampant. Psychologists divide themselves into different theoretical and practical schools, such as applied psychology, which attempts to apply various behavioral and cognitive theories to real world applications. Within applied psychology there is forensic psychology, industrial/occupational or io psychology , and developmental psychology as well as several other subfields.

Some popular subfields or schools of psychological theory and research include clinical psychology, comparative psychology, and biological psychology. There are also behavioralists, Freudians (who practice psychoanalysis) cognitive psychologists, and those that subscribe to theories of functionalism, structuralism, gestalt , or humanism.

Many psychologists end up as either researchers or as therapist. Still others end up in fields that allow them to apply their work to corporate and other organizations, within the criminal justice field, or in helping develop and administer programs for schools, at-risk populations, or other groups such as prisoners or victims.

School Spirit is More Than a Costume

December 13th, 2010

Certain parts of the country are obsessed with sports. The obvious example is that Texas is football country (and Oklahoma and Nebraska, etc.). In other places it’s hockey or baseball or even basketball that take center stage in high schools, colleges, and even middle schools these days. It’s not just the students at the school who get involved, but parents, teachers, administrator, and community boosters. School spirit is a way of bringing together an entire community.

Those who think of school spirit as putting on Mascot Costumes or wearing school colors and cheering at games are missing out on the larger experience. School spirit is about pride in a community endeavor — and that lasts much longer than a single game or even a single season.

The people who decorate their cars and homes and selves with school colors, mascot emblems, and even paint their faces on game days are connecting with something larger than themselves. They are recognizing that a successful school team — and a successful school — are the result of the interest and investment of an entire community — that it takes students, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff, and, yes, community support. Exhibiting school spirit is just another way of supporting the school.

Where Cognition and Adwords Meet

August 20th, 2010

A picture might be worth a thousand words, but the right word in the right place is worth an awful lot as well. It’s never been more true in today’s digital age, where words and images go together like never before. The speed of information has accelerated so rapidly, that hardly anyone is able to keep up with it, to predict where it might be going. It’s a very exciting time to be alive.

Now that contemporary culture has the first generation of adults who have grown up with computers as part of the home, there are some studies in their early stages to speak to how people receive and interpret information . Things have changed, and even though it seems possible that the attention spans are shorter, there are other findings that offer a more optimistic view of the next generation.

People do seem to be developing strong reflexes or patterns of thought, where they can interpret information much more rapidly. The mind has filters to separate useful stimuli from background noise. The work of an adwords management company can demonstrate how the instruments of human perception are a lot like a search engine. Some words have more weight than others, and some words can be discounted altogether as part of an unnecessary white noise. The changes in perception are still part of a developing generation, and it’s impossible to guess how people might think in another 30 years, but it’s also exciting to consider.

Etiquette in South Africa

May 9th, 2009

Understanding the customs and rules of etiquette is important to one traveling to any foreign country. The same of course, goes for visiting South Africa. For instance, just the simple greeting, the giving of gifts, the behavior expected when visiting one’s house for dinner is an opportunity to either offend someone unknowingly, or to react in a gracious manner through the knowledge of these customs.

When meeting a person in public, such as on a city street or in some of the best hotels, South Africa styles of greetings vary according the heritage of the person you are greeting. Some of the people from South Africa will greet foreigners with a hand shake and a smile, while keeping eye contact. If greeting a South African woman it is best to wait for her to respond first, as not all the women of the country are comfortable with shaking hands, and will just merely nod their head.

There are also unspoken rules regarding the giving and the receiving of gifts. Gifts should always be wrapped with care, as it is the effort that goes into the decoration, as well as the gift, that is appreciated. When given a gift, it is polite to open it immediately. To accept a gift but wait until later to open it may offend the giver. Most of the time gives are exchanged for Christmas and to celebrate birthdays, however if invited to one’s house, one must never fail to bring a gift for the host. A simple flower arrangement or some candies are all that is expected.

When dining at the house of a South African, it is important to be on time and to call ahead to find out if there is anything the host would like you to bring. Casual clothes are generally not worn, those such as shorts or jeans, unless it is known that this will be a casual event. Most of the time, those attending the houses of others tend to dress up just a bit. And as it is just simple polite behavior, it is in good taste to offer to help to clean up after the meal. These simple niceties and acts of politeness will generate a feeling of ease when attempting to understand another culture, and in avoiding causing unnecessary offense.

Philosophical Prime Minister

April 13th, 2009

Lee Hsien Loong is becoming to modern Malaysian society, much in the way that Plato became to ancient thinkers of Rome and modern thinkers today, a prince, a philosophical prince. His intelligence has never been questioned. His father was the previous Singapore Prime Minister, so from an early age he was groomed to take over that position. And one anonymous Singaporean shopkeeper stated that what was once the father’s ambition, the son has now achieved. The story reads as a Shakespearean play. Educated at Harvard and Cambridge, he follows much of the Confucian philosophies that so guided his father during his term as prime minister. What the country is expecting is a radical shift in governmental leadership, born out of a system of traditional beliefs.

The director of Asia Economic Forecasting, David Cohen, remarked that while many find the succession a bit…questionable…no one would ever doubt his competency to lead this country. Citizens of Singapore are well aware of the cultural restrictions they live within, and are also aware that while Lee is modern and forward thinking, his is still a man that has been involved for years, in the oppressive governmental control, as first a cabinet minister and then the Deputy Prime Minister. Singapore has had the reputation in many foreign countries over the years as, quite frankly, a somewhat intense place to visit. Gum chewing was outlawed until very recently. A more congenial and welcoming manner would benefit all aspects of business for this country, from the corner Singapore boutique hotel, to the petrol stations to the opera.

Many aspects of Singapore are censored. In the past, the media kept hidden certain circumstances while exposing those issues that were permitted in being exposed. One such set of stories showed the softer side of Lee. One that his advisers have insisted upon, not just for the cameras, but in reality. Lee insists on taken the changes slowly. He is meanwhile supporting moves forward in technology, logistics and matters of social change.

International Humitarian Aid Conference

March 28th, 2009

The sixth annual Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development Conference (DIHAD) is scheduled for April 7 – 9, 2009 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Center. DIHAD 2009 will focus on “Empowering Communities: From Disaster to Development.”

DIHAD focuses on both humanitarian aid and encouraging development. It also addresses community emergency preparedness across the globe. Since many developing countries lack basic communication and technology infrastructure, the conference tends to zero in on those issues as well. The conference receives the full support of both the UAE Red Crescent Society and the United Nations.

Over 300 companies from around the world are expected to participate in the conference, which is the largest humanitarian event in the Middle East. Companies will represent a wide range of sectors and industries, from government and charitable organizations to healthcare providers, medical equipment suppliers, engineering and environmental solutions, adn emergency services as well as manufacturers, distributors, and technology providers. Nearly twenty countries will be involved in the conference.

Dubai‘s rapid development into a major tourist, sports, and event destination has positioned it as the jewel of the Middle East. In addition to state-of-the art conference facilities, the city has improved its infrastructure and transportation and is home to a wide-range of modern accommdations (it’s very easy to find a modern Dubai UAE hotel), restaurants, and other businesses needed to support events of this scope.

Beauty and Character

March 14th, 2009

The islands off the coast of Spain are known world wide. All have mild and temperate climates and pristine beaches. Throughout history many travelers have passed through the waters of the Mediterranean and stood on these coasts, and more recently the world of tourism have brought many strangers to the towns on these islands. The locals here consider no one a stranger though. The locals have the reputation of welcoming all with open arms, and should one step into a town here, one would be a stranger no more. The best Balearic hotels treat travelers as family, and what a better and more substantial way to visit, than to really get to know those in your care. The islands are similar in their tranquility, lush farmlands and history, rich folklore and history, the beaches and the forests, but like children from the same family, they have similarities and differences. The personality, while still inherently Spanish, changes from island to island. While Ibiza is the wild child, known to throw late-nite parties, Cabrera and Formentera are quiet and poetic in nature. Mallorca is the environmental sound community. While all the islands are known to protect what is theirs, the city of La Palma became the first to use energy saving light bulbs in all the traffic signals and throughout the rest of the city.

The islands have been occupied by many different cultures, from the Romans to the Greeks to the Carthaginians to the Byzantines. This, while dramatic and terrifying throughout history, is part of the reason why these islands and their occupants are so hospitable currently. Monuments and architectural structures still stand today as a testament to all that has occurred here over the years. And all the islands have sites which draw archaeologists the world over to these shores. Many dating back to prehistoric times. And in more current history, the struggles between the inhabitants and French, British and their own mainland of Spain, has given this area of the Mediterranean quite a bit of character. And what is better than beauty, with character to back it up, all the while creating a region so much the more beautiful for the life that has been lived and is continued to be lived here. And as follows with beauty and character, the islands have become rich with art, music, and food. Throughout the year there are many festivals honoring historical battles or traditional beliefs. Lively celebrations of history, the good and the bad. For it all plays a part in the whole and the now.

Tsunamis and Earthquakes in Singapore

February 23rd, 2009

Over the years the island of Singapore has been considered quite safe from the threat of a major disaster caused by earthquakes on the fault line that runs along the floor of the South China Sea. The earthquakes that occur out at sea are responsible for tsunamis or tidal waves that can wreak havoc on islands at sea. Such an earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean in 2004, and was the cause of much devastation and disaster. As with all major natural disasters, various agencies conduct studies, which do tend to come too late for the immediate situations but are intended to learn more about better courses of action and preparedness should such a threat be posed again in the future. One such organization is called the National Environment Agency, or NEA.

The National Environment Agency has spent over 2 million dollars on the study they have been conducting since the 2004 disaster in hopes of discovering the seismological reasons for the tsunamis and to perhaps come to and understanding that will allow them to prevent the occurrence of such a disaster in Singapore. The island of Singapore is well populated due to the influence of the business districts, the international tourism trade, the many elegant restaurants and the best hotels in Singapore that would be devastated by such a disaster. As well, they would like to be able to protect and to give fair warning to the local population that lives along the beaches and the coastline would be most affected by a tidal wave.

The two areas of study are simple. The first is to simply study the activity along the ocean floor. There is much to be learned about the fault line as in the past it has produced quakes that have registered as high a level nine on the Richter Scale. There are also many underwater land slides that can affect the occurrence tsunamis. The one fact that can save Singapore should such and earthquake of high magnitude is that the water surrounding the island is relatively shallow. This affects the size of the tidal wave that would occur, creating a much smaller wave in the end. It also serves to slow down the speed of the wave giving the population and the authorities on the island of Singapore roughly 10 hours to evacuate and to prepare. This would affect local residents and those residing in a boutique hotel Singapore.

Happy 50th NASA!

July 29th, 2008

On this day, fifty years ago, President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act. It was on that day America began its concerted quest to explore the unknown. NASA has helped us to “boldly go where no man has gone before.” We owe so much of our modern technology thanks to the research and exploration initiated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. We have GPS, satellite TV, foam mattresses, and advancements in technology – computers, medical imaging, nanotechnology, weather monitoring, and so much more – thanks to people willing to dedicate their careers and lives to exploring the space we live in.

Celebrating NASA’s 50th anniversary is commemorating fifty years of discovery, innovation and inspiration. To observe the occasion, there are many space and technology related events going on. Tonight is even NASA night at the Astros baseball game at home in Houston. For a full list of future events, check out their events calendar at: www.nasa.gov/50th/calendar

When Specialty Tribal Tattoos Matter

June 19th, 2008

There are times when an individual wants a tattoo of utmost and supreme quality, especially when it comes to intricate tribal tattoos. In these cases, it is often a good idea to opt for a tattoo artist that specializes in a certain type of art. While some artists specialize in designs, others specifically concentrate on faces, animals and even the colorization of tattoos. It is not uncommon for an individual to get a tattoo with a very reputable artist and then opt for another to do the color and shading. This ensures that an individual gets a very top quality tattoo that attracts admiration from even those who say they dislike tattoos.

Because of their symbolic importance, many look for such expertise when it comes to cross tattoos and religious tattoos. Though a cross can symbolize a religious affiliation, the vast majority of individuals that opt for this type of tattoo do so to memorialize lost love ones. When getting a tattoo in someone’s honor, there is no doubt a quality piece of artwork is to be expected. It is important that the final product be tasteful and well laid, in addition to symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
