School Spirit is More Than a Costume
December 13, 2010 8:10 pm SocietyCertain parts of the country are obsessed with sports. The obvious example is that Texas is football country (and Oklahoma and Nebraska, etc.). In other places it’s hockey or baseball or even basketball that take center stage in high schools, colleges, and even middle schools these days. It’s not just the students at the school who get involved, but parents, teachers, administrator, and community boosters. School spirit is a way of bringing together an entire community.
Those who think of school spirit as putting on Mascot Costumes or wearing school colors and cheering at games are missing out on the larger experience. School spirit is about pride in a community endeavor — and that lasts much longer than a single game or even a single season.
The people who decorate their cars and homes and selves with school colors, mascot emblems, and even paint their faces on game days are connecting with something larger than themselves. They are recognizing that a successful school team — and a successful school — are the result of the interest and investment of an entire community — that it takes students, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff, and, yes, community support. Exhibiting school spirit is just another way of supporting the school.
