Textiles in Rajasthan

After two and a half weeks doing high tech business networking in Mumbai, we left on a train ride for Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, where we made reservations at one of the Rajasthan luxury hotels and spent a week visiting many textile stores, historical sites and clothes stores.

We made some block print cloth purchases and added a new facet to our business trip: negotiating, sourcing, producing and shipping wholesale clothes to my son Dave, who started selling Indian objects in the farmers market in the South of France.

We visited the timeless monuments of the Mughal era. The Maharajah’s City Palace in Jaipur was stunning. Hawa Mahal, the Palace of the Winds was built for the Maharajah’s many wives; Jantar Mantar, the Royal observatory, which has been telling the time for well over 200 years, was precise, well only within two seconds. Just a few miles away we extensively explored Amber Palace. This is where the Maharajah was established before moving to the capital of Jaipur.

We were in awe at the stunning beauty of the Mughal architectrue of ramparts and turrets, interior gardens and terraces, galleries and archways, fountains and waterways, inlay marble and geometrical vaults, ceilings of convex mirror mosaics reflecting the evening candle light, but what we really appreciated was the built in cooling system.

The following week we spent going from one place to another, experiencing the shifting realities as we discovered some of India’s most beautiful sights. From Pushkar, which is a small holy town located on the edge of the Rajasthan desert. We then headed on an early morning bus back to Jaipur, back to the hot, dry, noisy, bustling and dusty city. A day later another bus took u to visit the Taj Mahal, the next day after that, a train brought us to hectic Chowk Bowli, which is the main bazaar in New Delhi, and for our last night in India, we flew a plane to Kathmandu in Nepal.
