Hong Kong’s Amusement Parks
January 19, 2009 12:03 am TravelEvery year, throngs of travelers make their way to Hong Kong. While most think of it as a city, it ias actualy a Special Administrative Region and encompasses the city proper as well as the New Territories and the Outlying Islands. While Hong Kong is home to museums, historical sites, parks, and a multitude of attractions, many people don’t realize that there are a number of theme parks in the area. More and more families who travel to Hong Kong are taking advantage of these parks that provide a good time for all ages.
The newest theme park is Hong Kong Disneyland. Located on Lantau Island, it has the usual resort attached to the iconic park. This Disneyland is considerably smaller than Disney parks in the US. Though it has been open since 2005, its hasn’t reached the popularity of other Disney parks, which translates to much shorter lines most of the year. Some of the park’s most popular shows include “Mickey’s PhilarMagic 4D” as well as “Golden Mickey’s,” and the “Festival of the Lion King” stage shows. Disney plans to open a second park in the near future.
On the south of Hong Kong Island is Ocean Park. This combines the modern amusement park with an educational aquarium. It hosts Large sea water tanks with a large variety of marine life as well as roller coasters and other rides. Factor in that the park is home to the famous Hong Kong pandas and its easy to see why this park remains a favorite with locals and tourists alike. The two sections of the park are connected by cablecar which offer stunning views of the South China Sea.
While not an offical theme park, the Avenue of the Stars is the Hong Kong equivalent of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It honors stars of Hong Kong’s cinema on a seaside promenade. Views of the Hong Kong skyline and Victoria Harbour are breathtaking. Every night the Avenue hosts “A Symphony of Lights” which is a laser and light show set to music. It is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest “Permanent Light and Sound Show.”
Those who aren’t interested in the amusement parks or want to have a more well-rounded vacation will may want to check out Victoria Peak, the Temple of Ten Thousand Buddhas, the Hong Kong Museum of History, the Ping Shan Heritage Trail, or the Kowloon Walled City Park. In addition to the traditional attractions, the city is also home to a variety of shopping malls and markets, 5 star Hong Kong hotels, incredible restaurants, and a thriving nightlife.
